Making strength a priority after 40 is a positive investment in yourself. Creatine can be worth considering alongside resistance training: trials in older, mostly postmenopausal women have found additional gains in some muscle and strength measures. Evidence specifically in women in their forties is more limited.
Give your strength routine thoughtful support
You may already be making time for resistance exercise and paying attention to what you eat. Creatine offers a practical supplement option to consider alongside those habits, with research that looks at muscle and strength rather than a vague wellness promise.
The relevant findings come from women who trained regularly. Keep that exercise context in mind when deciding what you want from your supplement.
What the research means for your decision
In a 12-week trial of 18 women averaging about 65 years old, 5 g of creatine daily with resistance training produced greater improvements in several strength measures and muscle mass than training with placebo. Aguiar et al., 2013.
A 24-week trial in 60 older women also found advantages for bench-press strength and appendicular lean mass with creatine plus training, although leg-press gains were not greater than training with placebo. Gualano et al., 2014.
These findings give strength-focused women a reason to consider creatine. They are not a promise of the same result at every age, and they do not establish treatment for menopausal symptoms.
