Creatine safety: kidney tests and side effects

Reassuring findings from healthy-adult trials, clear precautions, and what to check before choosing creatine.

Want to feel informed before choosing creatine? Controlled trials in adults without known kidney disease have found no deterioration in kidney function at the doses and durations tested. That is reassuring evidence, while personal medical conditions still deserve individual advice.

What the kidney research found

In a 12-week trial of resistance-trained adults eating a high-protein diet, researchers measured kidney filtration directly. Creatine—20 g daily for five days, then 5 g daily—did not cause a significant deterioration compared with placebo. Read the trial.

This provides useful reassurance for similar healthy adults. It does not establish safety for people with kidney disease or every possible duration of use.

Creatine and creatinine: know the difference

Creatine is the supplement ingredient. Creatinine is a breakdown product used in kidney assessment. Taking creatine can affect the context in which a creatinine result is interpreted.

Tell your clinician the product, amount and start date before discussing blood tests. An abnormal result should still be assessed; do not dismiss it because you use a supplement.

Keep the first step appropriate for you

If you have kidney disease, unexplained kidney-test results, another medical condition, take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss supplementation with your clinician before starting.

Follow the product directions. Water-weight changes or digestive symptoms can occur, and tolerance varies. Stop and seek advice for persistent discomfort; severe or unexplained symptoms need assessment. Our digestion and water-weight guide explains the distinction.

Then make the product choice straightforward

Once you have addressed any personal health questions, focus on the ingredient, serving and format. AEVA’s Starter is designed around Creavitalis® creatine, 300 g of powder and a reusable jar: 60 servings at 5 g each.

A one-time Starter lets you choose the product without committing to recurring orders. For formula or format questions, contact AEVA; for personal medical advice, speak with your clinician.
